ysabetwordsmith: Text says New Year Resolutions on notebook (resolutions)
[personal profile] ysabetwordsmith posting in [community profile] goals_on_dw
There are all kinds of writing challenges and goals that people like to do. Some are individual, others are group events. Some are all year, others shorter. Some have speculative fiction themes, others are ordinary. They span a great many different formats including but not limited to fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and fanwriting. Here are some for your inspiration. On Dreamwidth, see communities for Writing. Note that some like [community profile] getyourwordsout makes regular checkin posts for your writing projects.

You can pick whichever challenge(s) you want to set as a goal in 2025 and reply with a comment. Below the list of challenges is a short form for listing which you have chosen. Make a post in your blog like "I signed up for the Writing challenge in [community profile] goals_on_dw" -- or list the specific challenge if you're doing an official one somewhere else instead of a personal one here. Then make a tag for it like "Writing Challenge" and put that on the post; it should stick that way. Check your Interests page to see if you have Writing, Fiction, Meta, Science Fiction, Fanfic, etc. listed there, which helps people find you. You don't have to sign up to participate, it just helps spread the word and attract more readers.

See also the Fannish 50 challenge, which simply aims to post fifty entries on any topic in fandom. If you want to write the captain's logs of an alternate Enterprise, analyze the social dynamics of Hobbiton, describe the architecture Hogwarts, or review every book you read all year, go for it. You can even double-count anything that applies to two or more goals, e.g. [community profile] getyourwordsout and Fannish 50.

Do you know of any other writing challenges in 2025? Share a link so they can be added to the list of options.

* [community profile] communal_creators -- Create, Commiserate, Compete
Writing, art, podfic, meta, vidding, and other creative efforts.

Welcome to Communal Creators, a place to band together to help each other start, work on, or finish a project in September and October. Why those months? Because while National Novel Writing Month in November made sense, once upon a time, it is a very inconvenient time to many people. Backing the timeline out to after school starts but before the push of the holidays for many was my intention.

Timeline will be that the official creation period will run from September 15th to October 15th. You CAN use projects that existed before this point, but only log the effort that goes into it during the creation period. You may also double-dip -- use this time to finish, begin, work on things for other events!

What are acceptable creations? ANYTHING.

Note: The founders of this community are primarily Doctor Who fanfic writers, so the challenges will often be biased toward DW, Torchwood, Sarah Jane Adventures, Class, and the expanded universe, especially Big Finish. You are welcome to change anything to suit your fandoms or interests.

Establish a habit of writing ten minutes a day by providing focused writing prompts for producing a short scene.

matsushima: won't you swing down low? (story time)
From: [personal profile] matsushima
I don't know if Storystorm is "officially" happening this year (no sign-up info on the site) but it's a generative challenge, originally for picture book writers but now for anyone, to come up with 30 ideas in January so you can dip back into that bucket during the year if you start to run dry.

I don't see a #FirstDraftFriday 2025 launch post yet but they're active - the last #FirstDraftFriday 2024 post went up on schedule and there's nothing to indicate it won't continue next year. It's a challenge to write the first draft of a picture book on the first Friday of every month.

I've never participated in 12x12 because I can't afford the fees, but if you've got $200 to spare ($400 for gold memberships, only available from your second year onwards) I know some people really find it a valuable community with useful resources for writing, revising, and querying (and, hopefully, publishing!) picture books.

I've never heard of NaPiBoWriWee before but I'm definitely going to participate this year!

I'm just quite shocked that my little idea is spreading around DW. I'm so used to being ignored and no one understanding what I'm talking about that this has totally surprised me. I'm used to amusing myself because no one ever joins in, that I'll be astounded if anyone does! 😮

DW has been a revelation to me: a place for creative people like me! Wish I’d found it years ago, I’d never heard of it til about 18 months ago.

Too many people feel lonely and unwanted in the modern world, I wonder how that’s going to improve. We need real life communities back again, somehow.

Yes...modern society is perfect for businesses and anything money-oriented, but not for living creatures with biological needs and functions e.g. community, companionship, love, fun. It's work work work 24/7 now isn't it.

Thanks for those links. They are both American but I see that one has a few communities in Britain. Hopefully one will start up near me soon. It's nice to think that someone, somewhere is trying to improve the world for humans.

That sounds nice, I'm pretty wary of sharing my life details however. My life has basically been a rollercoaster for the last few years, I'm exhausted, it's been me defending my family against problem after problem after problem after problem...I know I'm not the only one though, everyone seems to be in the same situation these days.

This picture sums it up, I'm the lone warrior fighting the cavalry:
