[community profile] moodthemeinayear is now open for 2026!

Have you ever wanted to create a custom mood theme, but found yourself overwhelmed by all of the potential moods you'd have to make? Mood Theme in a Year has you covered! The community assigns three moods a week for you to design graphics for, with regular week long breaks. Draw, screencap, and/or animate your way to the custom mood theme of your dreams, with a community by your side to support and encourage you.

Not up for a full year/132 images? No problem! That's just the Maximum Track, which runs from January 1st through (roughly) the end of the year. If you want to make a smaller mood theme, you can follow the Minimum Track (18 images) or the Medium Track (34 images), or maybe somewhere between one of those and the Maximum Track. The goal of this community is to create a custom mood theme that you like, at a pace that works for you.

For those who missed it: While uploading and using a custom mood theme is restricted to paid accounts, as of December 2025, creating at least 18 mood graphics can earn you Dreamwidth points! Now, even if a paid account is out of your budget, you can still have the chance to upload and use your own custom mood theme. Read this post for more details.

The first three moods of 2026 are now up; thanks for reading, and I hope to see you there!

Most people who like New Year's resolutions or other year-beginning goals will be setting them on December 31 or January 1. This post provides a place to share yours. If you have a single goal or a small cluster that fit in a paragraph or few, you can put them in a comment below this post. Longer lists or discussions should go on your own blog, with a link to that post and maybe a summary of your approach in a comment below. Scroll down for resources on goals.

26 things in 2026. (See the challenge from 2025.)

Anyone who wants to play, just make your list before January 1, 2026. You don't have to post the list. But maybe show it to someone else so you can tell them you've done a thing.  Goals can be big or small, same kind of thing or different things, whatever inspires you to get stuff done.

The challenge will begin on January 1, 2026 and end on December 31, 2026.

You can play here, since this community gathers people interested in goals and resolutions, or in your own blog. Make a post in your blog like "I signed up for the 26 Things in 26 challenge in [community profile] goals_on_dw." That's also a good place to keep track of what you accomplish. Then make a tag for it like "26 Things in 2026" and put that on the post; it should stick that way. Check your Interests page to see if you have 2026, Challenges, Goals, Tasks, To Do List, etc. listed there, which helps people find you. You don't have to sign up to participate, it just helps spread the word and attract more readers.

This is the signup post for the Fannish 50 blogging challenge in 2026. (See the 2025 challenge.)

Fannish 50 began in 2023 with a challenge by [personal profile] colls in [community profile] swannee. Since then, it has spread to other blogs and communities.  As of 2025, there is also [community profile] fandom50challenge.

The parameters are simple: Make fifty posts about topics related to fandom. You may set any theme(s) you wish, or pick random topics for each post. "Questions and Questionnaires for Three Weeks for Dreamwidth" includes a list of questionnaires on fannish topics if you want to use one of those as a framework. Post something like "I signed up for the Fannish 50 challenge at [community profile] goals_on_dw " in your blog, then put a "Fannish 50" tag in your blog to make it easier for other people to find your entries. Adding "Fannish 50" to your Interests will also help identify you as a participant or reader. (It is best to use exactly the phrase "Fannish 50" because DW search tools don't recognize variations as the same topic, and to attach the tag to a post so it sticks.) Another good idea is setting up a masterlist where you can link your posts as you make them, which may or may not be part of your announcement post. Then make a comment below this post with details about your goal. You don't have to sign up to participate, it just helps spread the word and attract more readers.

Primary posting will run January 1 -- December 31, 2026. With 50 posts, it fits neatly into a year with 2 weeks to spare. However, you don't have to do it that way if you don't want to, and there's no hard limit on posting timeframe. You could make them daily posts, or monthly posts, or sporadic posts, whatever works for you and eventually adds up to 50.

This is cross posted from my personal journal by request.
*****

I have a tendency to collect prompt lists like Pokemon. (Or a non-traditional dragon horde) It's more of a "something to do later on my own" than to participate in the ongoing challenge. I like sharing these finds, but I always have a hard time figuring out how to do it and by the time I can, it ends up late in the month >_<

Anyway, these are the October challenges (outside of DW) I collected between August 16th and now. (Oddly enough, I did find the annual Suptober list, despite it being said they were not continuing, but no SuperBats list to be found so far this year.)

Because they were collected as screencaps on a different phone than the one I am currently typing this out on, I do not have links, but I hope I have provided you with enough information to find them all via a Google image search or alternate locations. Also, because I am writing this post on a phone, typing out every prompt on each list is not reasonable. All lists were originally found on Instagram, but many have other socials, websites, substacks, etc. associated with them. I listed the ones I know for sure when I could. I also tried to include a description of the challenge and/or 3 sample prompts, along with the username of the host(s).

This is the signup post for the [community profile] sunshine_revival blogging challenge in 2025. It's a new version of the now defunct [community profile] sunshine_challenge.

The parameters are simple: Prompts will appear on [community profile] sunshine_revival  in July, and you make stuff inspired by them. Most people choose writing, but it doesn't have to be. Post something like "I signed up for the Sunshine Revival challenge at [community profile] goals_on_dw" in your blog, then put a "Sunshine Revival" tag in your blog to make it easier for other people to find your entries. Adding "Sunshine Revival" to your Interests will also help identify you as a participant or reader. (It is best to use exactly the phrase "Sunshine Revival" because DW search tools don't recognize variations as the same topic, and to attach the tag to a post so it sticks.) Another good idea is setting up a masterlist where you can link your posts as you make them, which may or may not be part of your announcement post. Then make a comment below this post with details about your goal. You don't have to sign up to participate, it just helps spread the word and attract more readers.

Primary posting will run July 1 -- July 31, 2025.

The concept at the core of 1000 Hours Outside is simple -- the amount of time kids spend outside ‘actually matters’. Though you may not hear this very often, a childhood flooded with nature time benefits kids (and adults) in untold ways.

The spirit behind this journey is one of encouragement and excitement - not burden. For many, being intentional about scheduling in nature time is the one and only thing needed to transform childhood

The [community profile] snowflake_challenge is coming! It runs January 1-31 with fun fannish challenges on alternating days. Many Dreamwidth fans post daily during this period to catch the extra traffic and make new friends.

Read "How to Hack the Snowflake Challenge" for ideas on planning ahead. Some challenges repeat every year or close to that, so you can do them early and just copy or link that on the relevant day. Among the things you can do in advance are:
-- Make sure you have a current introduction to use for reference in friending memes.
-- Update your fandom information in a blanket statement, profile, and/or sticky post.
-- Check that you have a fanwork ready to post.
-- Keep a list of your favorite fanworks to recommend, and a masterlist of your own to share.
-- Set some goals for the coming year.

[personal profile] themusecalliope came up with this idea for a challenge:

25 things in 2025. (I tried 101 things in 1001 days and...yeah. I lose track. Gonna try to be more targeted. Remember to make it something quantifiable.)

Anyway. Anyone who wants to play, just make your list before the Jan 1. Don't have to tell me. But maybe show it to someone else so you can tell them you've done a thing
.

You can play here, since this community gathers people interested in goals and resolutions, or under the original post. Just let the creator know that you like the idea either way.

[community profile] moodthemeinayear is gearing up for its second full run!

Once a week starting in January, the community mod will make a post with three mood themes. Those are the suggested moods to work on for that week. In those posts, you can talk with other community members, brainstorm, encourage each other, make suggestions, and generally cheer one another on. You are welcome to post any mood images you make to the community as you go, and you are welcome to join or leave the community at any point in the schedule.

Despite the name, there are three main schedules for this community:

  • The Maximum Mood Theme Track, which begins on January 1st and continues through the year with regular breaks
  • The Minimum Mood Theme track, which starts seven times a year and goes for six weeks at a time
  • The Medium Mood Theme track, which starts three times a year and goes for fifteen weeks at a time, with one break in the middle

  • Mood prompt posting will begin on January 1st and continue through the year. The Maximum track will include all 132 moods; the Minimum Track will include the bare minimum 15 moods for a complete mood theme, plus an optional three moods that will give you the greatest image variety in your mood theme for the fewest actual images; the Medium Track includes all 34 higher-level moods that other moods inherit images from.

While Dreamwidth requires a paid account to use a custom mood theme, you do not need a paid account or even to want to use a custom mood theme to participate in this community! If you're intrigued by the idea of creating a custom mood theme, or just watching along and potentially cheering on others as they do so, you are welcome to join in the fun to the extent you feel comfortable. (There's also the secret hidden option of creating a mood theme with completely original/copyright-free images and submitting it to Dreamwidth to be a possible site-supported mood theme 👀)

To find out more, check out Mood Theme in a Year's profile.

I'm here to share the Fanfic Reading Challenge on Tumblr! It's a yearly challenge based on the concept 'You'll be reading fanfic anyway, so why not feel even more like you're accomplishing something?'

Every year they put together a huuuuge spreadsheet of fic criteria to be ticked off: everything from 'fics by authors starting with every letter of the alphabet' to 'a stuck in an elevator fic' to 'a fic with a gemstone/rock-based word in the title' to 'a fic you've been putting off for silly (to you) reasons'. There are 300 possible points to be gained with three levels of possible achievements (Hard Mode being 190 tasks completed), and fics can double up for multiple matching criteria if applicable.

The exact list of tasks changes each year, so they're currently working on 2025's challenge! OFC you can join at any time; I only discovered it in October and have had the spreadsheet open on my computer at all times ever since :'D

I don't personally have any involvement in putting it together; just wanted to spread the word of something fun! :)
