We made it to the end of May! \o/ If you have completed some of your short-term goals or subgoals, and/or you're still chugging away at your ongoing goals, then pat yourself on the back. You worked hard for that. We've also passed through of spring. If you're doing seasonal goals, hopefully you have finished the spring one(s), so you can look ahead to the summer batch.

This year I'm trying something new, continuing to track goals at the end of each month. So far it seems to be helping, so that's encouraging. I'm looking at my goal list more often and trying to keep ticking off more of them. The main drawback is that this update becomes more of a chore each month.

Three Weeks for Dreamwidth is a celebration of the platform's anniversary, running April 25-May 15. During this time, people post content only visible on Dreamwidth (although it can be reposted elsewhere after the event ends). There's usually a flurry of activity as bloggers share anchor posts, new fiction, icons, banners, questionnaires, friending fests, memes, and other goodies. Community hosts often hold special activities in their communities too. Watch your reading page for more festivities.

Watch for a series of posts about goal-setting methods.

Are you doing a post a day for Three Weeks in your blog or other community, or some other activity? Post a comment about your goal to attract more readers. Follow the Threeweeks feed. See my 2024 Questionnaire and a list of other thematic questionnaires. See the Introduction / Friending Meme for this community's questionnaire about new bloggers, and the Introduction tag.

You worked hard for that. We've also gotten through the first month of spring. If you're doing seasonal goals, you may have finished some from winter and starting working on new ones for spring.

This year I'm trying something new, continuing to track goals at the end of each month. So far it seems to be helping, so that's encouraging. I'm looking at my goal list more often and trying to keep ticking off more of them.

Here are a couple of community activity updates from [personal profile] soc_puppet:

[community profile] moodthemeinayear is nearing its next break period! It begins on Wednesday. Following that break, the Minimum and Medium Tracks will reset, so it's a great time to jump on for anyone who wants a schedule to follow.

[community profile] summerofthe69's amnesty period will end on Monday, with theme suggestions for 2025 set to open on Wednesday. Voting for themes will begin in May, so you have plenty of time to ponder theme suggestions.

We have almost reached the end of January! \o/ By now, most New Year's resolutions that are going to hit roadblocks or fail completely have already done so. About 95% crash and burn before the end of January. If you're still going, you've passed the roughest part. If you're having trouble or you've given up, there are options.

We've passed the third week of January. This includes more of the dropoff days: January 17, January 19, and the third Friday.

Terramagne-America encourages people to make their own plans, with help if wanted or needed. Variations of "How is that working for you?" are used to gauge progress. Here's an example from Brief Action Planning with a flow chart. This concept applies to most problem-solving situations, and it's something that anyone can learn to use.

The above approach is a shorthand version of the engineer problem-solving method. It requires following several steps such as defining a problem, brainstorming solutions, testing a solution, evaluating results, and making changes if necessary.

A Walking Audit

Walking Audit or "Neighborhood Walk"

A Walking Audit is a technical term that could be more easily described as a Neighborhood Walk. A Walking Audit is the opportunity to gather a group of people and experience a community or neighborhood together. This simple activity is an opportunity to look and talk about our neighborhoods through a shared experience. A walking audit requires very little initial effort and is the next smallest step each of us can undertake in our community.

* How to Host a Neighborhood Walk
* Some Questions to Start the Conversation

This is a good project for anyone with goals like "walk (distance or frequency)," "spend X hours outdoors," "improve community," or "participate in local activism."

We made it through the second week of January. This is enough to get a better grasp of progress with New Year's resolutions. It's also into the period of rapid die-off. We have reached the second Friday in January, also known as Quitter's Day because so many people give up their New Year's resolutions then.

Feel free to copy the idea of a New Year's resolution check-in to your blog or other venue, to encourage yourself and your friends. Many people find that social support helps maintain resolutions. This is one area where online activity works as well as or better than facetime activity. Apps work too. Consider the pros and cons of getting your friends to help. Here on Dreamwidth we have [community profile] awesomeers and [community profile] do_it that may prove helpful for social support of goals.

According to an email from Facebook, the survey found that those who shared their New Year's resolution on Facebook were 36 percent more likely to stick to it. Additionally, 52 percent of those surveyed agreed that sharing their resolutions with others is helpful when it comes to accomplishing them. In my experience, saying (or posting) things out loud definitely makes them feel more real. Plus, if other people know about a goal you're trying to achieve, it may motivate you to keep working at it so you can provide future updates on your progress.

Community Thursday was started in 2022 by [personal profile] goodbyebird.

On Thursdays I'll make an effort to engage with communities on dw in one way or another, be it by commenting, posting, reccing, and so on. Heck, even creating a community, or doing mod work for said community. I'll then talk about what I got up to in my journal, using the Community Thursdays tag.

This will not only bring light to new communities for folks, but also bring some much needed life back into them
.

The goal is for bloggers to support communities and thereby keep them active. Be aware that Dreamwidth has a vast sink of dormant or dead communities, so it's vitally important to preserve the ones we love. There are various approaches to doing this challenge. See below for some ideas...

soc_puppet: A calendar page for January 2024 with emojis on various dates (Mood Theme in a Year)
[personal profile] soc_puppet
[community profile] moodthemeinayear is gearing up for its second full run!

Once a week starting in January, the community mod will make a post with three mood themes. Those are the suggested moods to work on for that week. In those posts, you can talk with other community members, brainstorm, encourage each other, make suggestions, and generally cheer one another on. You are welcome to post any mood images you make to the community as you go, and you are welcome to join or leave the community at any point in the schedule.

Despite the name, there are three main schedules for this community:

  • The Maximum Mood Theme Track, which begins on January 1st and continues through the year with regular breaks
  • The Minimum Mood Theme track, which starts seven times a year and goes for six weeks at a time
  • The Medium Mood Theme track, which starts three times a year and goes for fifteen weeks at a time, with one break in the middle

  • Mood prompt posting will begin on January 1st and continue through the year. The Maximum track will include all 132 moods; the Minimum Track will include the bare minimum 15 moods for a complete mood theme, plus an optional three moods that will give you the greatest image variety in your mood theme for the fewest actual images; the Medium Track includes all 34 higher-level moods that other moods inherit images from.

While Dreamwidth requires a paid account to use a custom mood theme, you do not need a paid account or even to want to use a custom mood theme to participate in this community! If you're intrigued by the idea of creating a custom mood theme, or just watching along and potentially cheering on others as they do so, you are welcome to join in the fun to the extent you feel comfortable. (There's also the secret hidden option of creating a mood theme with completely original/copyright-free images and submitting it to Dreamwidth to be a possible site-supported mood theme 👀)

To find out more, check out Mood Theme in a Year's profile.

3 for the Memories' 2024 session will be open for posts on January 3, 2025 and will run until January 24. Do let others know about us, as anyone can participate by just joining the community.

Just a reminder of how the event runs:

    1) Three photos only per person during each annual session. Members are encouraged to discuss the reason for their choices.

    2) Photos can be hosted at Dreamwidth or elsewhere, and should not be larger than 800 px width or height.

    3) All three photos should be in the same post. Cut tags should be placed after the first photo.

3 for the Memories is not a competition, and entries are not being judged. Rather, participants are encouraged to share photos they took in 2024 that they find meaningful in some way or which represent how they experienced the year.

Feel free to drop any questions about the community or how the event runs on our announcement post.
