Announcing the May Trope Mayhem Prompt List for 2025!

May Trope Mayhem is a multi-fandom/original creation event open to writers, artists, and creators of all kinds! Our creators have shared their favorite tropes, and we’ve put together a list of 31, one per day through the month of May. We encourage creators to join us for this month of fun tropey mayhem.
Our goal is to promote motivation and help with habit building, so we’re encouraging authors to keep their ficlets under 1,000 words, artists to stick to making just a sketch, gif makers to only do a single image, etc., as applicable to whatever you’re making.

Here are a couple of community activity updates from [personal profile] soc_puppet:

[community profile] moodthemeinayear is nearing its next break period! It begins on Wednesday. Following that break, the Minimum and Medium Tracks will reset, so it's a great time to jump on for anyone who wants a schedule to follow.

[community profile] summerofthe69's amnesty period will end on Monday, with theme suggestions for 2025 set to open on Wednesday. Voting for themes will begin in May, so you have plenty of time to ponder theme suggestions.

Today is the last day to nominate projects and patrons for the 2025 Rose and Bay Awards. If you have not yet nominated or boosted the signal, please do so now. It would be especially helpful for folks you know via places like Kickstarter or Patreon, as I'm not on those sites.  If you have goals like "participate in more Dreamwidth activities," "read more," or "support crowdfunding" then this is a good opportunity for those things.

These are the handlers for the 2025 award season:
Art: [personal profile] fuzzyred Nominate art! Vote for art! (3 nominations)
Fiction: [personal profile] curiosity Nominate fiction! Vote for fiction! (4 nominations)

soc_puppet: A calendar page for January 2024 with emojis on various dates (Mood Theme in a Year)
[personal profile] soc_puppet
[community profile] moodthemeinayear is gearing up for its second full run!

Once a week starting in January, the community mod will make a post with three mood themes. Those are the suggested moods to work on for that week. In those posts, you can talk with other community members, brainstorm, encourage each other, make suggestions, and generally cheer one another on. You are welcome to post any mood images you make to the community as you go, and you are welcome to join or leave the community at any point in the schedule.

Despite the name, there are three main schedules for this community:

  • The Maximum Mood Theme Track, which begins on January 1st and continues through the year with regular breaks
  • The Minimum Mood Theme track, which starts seven times a year and goes for six weeks at a time
  • The Medium Mood Theme track, which starts three times a year and goes for fifteen weeks at a time, with one break in the middle

  • Mood prompt posting will begin on January 1st and continue through the year. The Maximum track will include all 132 moods; the Minimum Track will include the bare minimum 15 moods for a complete mood theme, plus an optional three moods that will give you the greatest image variety in your mood theme for the fewest actual images; the Medium Track includes all 34 higher-level moods that other moods inherit images from.

While Dreamwidth requires a paid account to use a custom mood theme, you do not need a paid account or even to want to use a custom mood theme to participate in this community! If you're intrigued by the idea of creating a custom mood theme, or just watching along and potentially cheering on others as they do so, you are welcome to join in the fun to the extent you feel comfortable. (There's also the secret hidden option of creating a mood theme with completely original/copyright-free images and submitting it to Dreamwidth to be a possible site-supported mood theme 👀)

To find out more, check out Mood Theme in a Year's profile.

There are all kinds of craft challenges and goals that people like to do. Some are individual, others are group events. Some are all year, others shorter. Some have speculative fiction themes, others are ordinary. They span a great many different arts and crafts including but not limited to crochet, drawing, knitting, painting, quilting, sewing, and woodworking. Here are some for your inspiration. On Dreamwidth, see communities for Art and Crafts. Note that [community profile] get_knitted makes regular checkin posts for your craft projects.

You can pick whichever challenge(s) you want to set as a goal in 2025 and reply with a comment. Below the list of challenges is a short form for listing which you have chosen. Make a post in your blog like "I signed up for the Arts and Crafts challenge in [community profile] goals_on_dw" -- or list the specific challenge if you're doing an official one somewhere else instead of a personal one here. Then make a tag for it like "Arts and Crafts Challenge" and put that on the post; it should stick that way. Check your Interests page to see if you have Art, Crafts, Crochet, etc. listed there, which helps people find you. You don't have to sign up to participate, it just helps spread the word and attract more readers.

See also the Fannish 50 challenge, which simply aims to post fifty entries on any topic in fandom. If you want to crochet the crew of the Enterprise, sew a complete capsule wardrobe inspired by hobbits, or carve a replica of Hogwarts, go for it. Either writing about or posting pictures of your progress will count. You can even double-count anything that applies to two or more goals, e.g. stashbusting, crochet, and Fannish 50.

Do you know of any other arts and crafts challenges in 2025? Share a link so they can be added to the list of options.

    Chore Charts
You can use chore charts to organize housework, yardwork, and so on. Anything that's basically a bunch of little subtasks can be set up this way. These work for one person to track a string of things, or for a group of people to track who is responsible for what and which things have already been done. There are styles for all ages and many contexts. If you want to connect a reward system, consider having a board or basket with lots of perks to claim, and then getting first pick of those per day / week / whatever becomes an incentive to complete chores promptly. All this stuff can help with goals related to completing various types of chores consistently or at certain times, or with goals related to a peaceful family.

These materials show examples of the kinds of things you can draw yourself for your own habit tracker, which you may keep in a bullet journal or separately. Most are designed for dot grid pages, others for blank pages. Some are elaborate, for the crafty; others are minimalist, for the straightforward. There are also lists of things that people like to track. See also Habit Tracker Printables.
