Does anyone else here play Finch?

From their App Store page: Finch is a self-care pet app that helps you feel prepared and positive, one day at a time. I've seen it described in ads as a "self care Tamagotchi," which isn't inaccurate.

You can set goals for the day(/week/month or whatever custom repeat timetable works for you) and get points to spend on clothes for your birb and decorations for their room when you complete those goals. I find myself doing things I should do but don't want to (like taking my nighttime meds, which I am weirdly resistant to even tho I know they help?) because I want to get the rainbow stones to spend on my birb.

Finch is one of two things I pay for online (the other thing being Dreamwidth, hi!) but the free version is perfectly serviceable. You don't get as many limited items but it's not one of those things where you can only set 3 goals or use it for 7 days before they cut you off.

My favorite thing is that you can turn streaks on or off. If you're motivated by streaks, you can have a streak! If, like me, you are demotivated by streaks and the fear of breaking them, you can turn it off.

Please feel free to add me there, too: 29N5JBSC3D. (If you do, please either comment or PM if it's not obvious who you are from your name there!)

It's past sunset here. I slept most of the day away after running a few errands in the morning. (I had charms to burn and charms to buy.)

I know we all want to begin as we mean to go on but I want to remind everyone that if January 1, 2025 was not perfect - if you resolved to change out of your pajamas every day but didn't even get out of bed, if your goal is to read 100 books this year but you were too tired by the time you got home, any little (or big) way you felt like you "failed" today - it's OK. Today does not have to be any more important than the other 364 days this year. It is not a sign of bad things to come if you, for example, dropped your crepe and got hot sugar butter all over yourself and your clothes and had to walk home covered in sticky goop. *ahem*

I have OCD and one of my "things" is significant dates. If you have similar anxieties and struggles, this is a reminder that today doesn't have to be perfect. If you're having a really rough start to your year, you can tell yourself that you're getting your bad luck out of the way early. You can pick a date and say "the year doesn't really start until [Tolkien Day (January 3), Epiphany/Three Kings Day (January 6), Earth's Rotation Day (January 8), Appreciate a Dragon Day (January 16), etc.]" to give yourself some slack.

Finally, don't forget that "good enough is good enough" and "perfect is the enemy of good."

Previously in Keep It Simple, we looked at some alternatives to big, demanding New Year's resolutions. Goals don't have to be big and burdensome. They don't have to be hard and unpleasant. You can set goals that are fun, or goals to take care of yourself. If you're already floundering, make a point of cultivating your resilience with resolutions that give energy instead of draining it.

In a lot of ways 2024 was a garbage fire and 2025 seems likely worse. Some people may feel too tired for complex goals. Others may prefer something simpler in general. In precarious times, there's a saying: "I need the New Year to come in, sit down, shut up, and not touch anything." If that resonates with you, here are some ideas.

soc_puppet: A calendar page for January 2024 with emojis on various dates (Mood Theme in a Year)
[personal profile] soc_puppet
[community profile] moodthemeinayear is gearing up for its second full run!

Once a week starting in January, the community mod will make a post with three mood themes. Those are the suggested moods to work on for that week. In those posts, you can talk with other community members, brainstorm, encourage each other, make suggestions, and generally cheer one another on. You are welcome to post any mood images you make to the community as you go, and you are welcome to join or leave the community at any point in the schedule.

Despite the name, there are three main schedules for this community:

  • The Maximum Mood Theme Track, which begins on January 1st and continues through the year with regular breaks
  • The Minimum Mood Theme track, which starts seven times a year and goes for six weeks at a time
  • The Medium Mood Theme track, which starts three times a year and goes for fifteen weeks at a time, with one break in the middle

  • Mood prompt posting will begin on January 1st and continue through the year. The Maximum track will include all 132 moods; the Minimum Track will include the bare minimum 15 moods for a complete mood theme, plus an optional three moods that will give you the greatest image variety in your mood theme for the fewest actual images; the Medium Track includes all 34 higher-level moods that other moods inherit images from.

While Dreamwidth requires a paid account to use a custom mood theme, you do not need a paid account or even to want to use a custom mood theme to participate in this community! If you're intrigued by the idea of creating a custom mood theme, or just watching along and potentially cheering on others as they do so, you are welcome to join in the fun to the extent you feel comfortable. (There's also the secret hidden option of creating a mood theme with completely original/copyright-free images and submitting it to Dreamwidth to be a possible site-supported mood theme 👀)

To find out more, check out Mood Theme in a Year's profile.

I'm here to share the Fanfic Reading Challenge on Tumblr! It's a yearly challenge based on the concept 'You'll be reading fanfic anyway, so why not feel even more like you're accomplishing something?'

Every year they put together a huuuuge spreadsheet of fic criteria to be ticked off: everything from 'fics by authors starting with every letter of the alphabet' to 'a stuck in an elevator fic' to 'a fic with a gemstone/rock-based word in the title' to 'a fic you've been putting off for silly (to you) reasons'. There are 300 possible points to be gained with three levels of possible achievements (Hard Mode being 190 tasks completed), and fics can double up for multiple matching criteria if applicable.

The exact list of tasks changes each year, so they're currently working on 2025's challenge! OFC you can join at any time; I only discovered it in October and have had the spreadsheet open on my computer at all times ever since :'D

I don't personally have any involvement in putting it together; just wanted to spread the word of something fun! :)

This post organizes links to alternatives. Some of these may be alternatives to conventional times, customs, methods, expectations, etc. about making and maintaining goals or resolutions that suggest different approaches to accomplishing what you want. Some will be alternatives TO setting goals or resolutions, because that doesn't work for everyone, as well as things like coping with pressure or answering dumb questions. Work with the brain you have, not the brain that you wish you had -- or worse, the brain that someone else wishes you had. if you struggle with the idea of goals and resolutions, look here. Hopefully this will make it easier for people to find things they want.
