This year during Three Weeks for Dreamwidth, I'm writing about goal-setting frameworks for
goals_on_dw. Read Part 1: Introduction to Goal-Setting Frameworks, Part 2: The 1-3-5 Rule, Part 3: The 12-week Year, Part 4: ABCS (Achievable, Believable, Committed, Specific), Part 5: Backward Goal, Part 6: BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goals), Part 7: BSQ (Think Big, Act Small, Move Quick), Part 8: CLEAR (Collaborative, Limited, Emotional, Appreciable, Refinable), Part 9: Goal Pyramid, Part 10: Golden Circle, Part 11: GROW (Goal, Reality, Options, Way Forward), Part 12: HARD (Heartfelt, Animated, Required, Difficult), Part 13: KPI (Key Performance Indicators), Part 14: MASTER (Measurable, Achievable, Specific, Transforming, Evolving, Relevant).
Part 14: MASTER (Measurable, Achievable, Specific, Transforming, Evolving, Relevant)
MASTER goals stand for Measurable, Achievable, Specific, Transforming, Evolving, Relevant. This is a slightly more complex version of SMART goals. That stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. It's a good system, but not always enough for a complicated situation.

Consider the components of a MASTER goal. Measurable means that you can track things, such as numbers. You set benchmarks and use solid metrics to follow your progress. Achievable aims for a realistic goal that you can reach within a certain timeframe. Seek balance that will stretch your capacity without breaking it, neither too easy nor too hard. Specific requires you to pin down exactly what you want to achieve. This makes it easier to communicate what needs to be done by when, so that everyone understands the goal and their part in reaching it. Transforming indicates that the goal should bring about a major change or improvement. This helps people feel that their work truly matters. Evolving captures the resilient nature of goals. You have to watch the changing circumstances and make sure that you goal can adapt to whatever happens. Relevant ensures that the goal aligns with your broader ideals and objectives. It focuses your drive and actions, so you don't waste energy on trivial things.
The MASTER framework has many advantages. Its emphasis on evolution akes it more adaptable than other systems that can be rigid. It allows goals to change and stay aligned with other factors in the world. Its emotional aspect provides motivation. This keeps the goal on track despite challenges. It has broader applications, for both personal and career contexts. It sticks to key values, which makes the work more meaningful and therefore satisfying.
