Signup Post: Fannish 50 in 2025

This is the signup post for the Fannish 50 blogging challenge in 2025.

Fannish 50 began in 2023 with a challenge by

colls in

swannee. Since then, it has spread to other blogs and communities.

The parameters are simple: Make fifty posts about topics related to fandom. You may set any theme(s) you wish, or pick random topics for each post. "Questions and Questionnaires for Three Weeks for Dreamwidth" includes a list of questionnaires on fannish topics if you want to use one of those as a framework. Post something like "I signed up for the Fannish 50 challenge at

goals_on_dw " in your blog, then put a "Fannish 50" tag in your blog to make it easier for other people to find your entries. Adding "Fannish 50" to your Interests will also help identify you as a participant or reader. (It is best to use exactly the phrase "Fannish 50" because DW search tools don't recognize variations as the same topic, and to attach the tag to a post so it sticks.) Another good idea is setting up a masterlist where you can link your posts as you make them, which may or may not be part of your announcement post. Then make a comment below this post with details about your goal. You don't have to sign up to participate, it just helps spread the word and attract more readers.

Primary posting will run January 1 -- December 31, 2025. With 50 posts, it fits neatly into a year with 2 weeks to spare. However, you don't have to do it that way if you don't want to, and there's no hard limit on posting timeframe. You could make them daily posts, or monthly posts, or sporadic posts, whatever works for you and eventually adds up to 50.

My theme: Thinking about taking my headcanonposting to the next level and writing microfiction/drabbles based on individual headcanons, but I’m probably going to diverge from that theming eventually, knowing me.
My journal status: Basically open
Other details: I’m mostly interested in anime, gaming, and manga fandoms- if you’re curious about specifics just look at my pinned post and tagsets. A lot of my writing does revolve around rape and CSA as themes, but if there is content like that it usually goes under a cut. My journal has a lot of low-effort shitposting- if you want to see entries I’m proud of, just look under the “m’s effortposts” and “m’s effortposting” tags. (There is no difference between them. I’m just indecisive.)
Anything else you want to share: I’d love to meet some people who share my interests that I can have conversations with!

You might consider setting that for just a month or two, then see what else inspires you.

Most of my villains are abuse survivors. The same is true of prison inmates. It doesn't mean that survivors necessarily become criminals, just that most criminals are damaged people with a crappy past. I've never had much interest in villains who don't have a solid explanation for why they are so fucked up.

I did a few fannish 50 posts pretty late in 2024, but I want to redo them so I'll be starting this over in 2025.

My theme: Mixed, knowing me i’ll probably change my mind a lot and do a big variety of things! Definitely fanfic, as well as probably some lists and book reviews and whatnot

My journal status: Pretty much open!

Other details: My main fandoms right now are the spider-verse (specifically Sun Spider, the first ever canonically disabled spider-person!!), Daredevil and some miscellaneous MCU stuff, Gravity Falls, + I go feral for any of V.E. Schwab’s books. I would love to make friends that are doing this challenge too! I’m VERY new to dreamwidth and have no idea what I’m doing haha

Oh, that's cool. I've seen bits of spider-verse but didn't know they'd added a disabled one. \o/ I think the spider motif is especially well suited to iteration because of how a classic spiderweb divides into sections -- it's just naturally iterative. We get orb weavers and garden spiders here that are gorgeous architects.

Don't worry about fitting 50 fannish posts into one year. I put the 2025 label on the post because the challenge fits into one year as a weekly thing, and so I can make another post next year. But there's no rigid timeframe. People could do 50 as daily posts, or as monthly posts, or whatever.

That's going to be tough because so many bloggers ask for "What you want to see more of?" and "What would you like to see next?" feedback. For people with tons of ideas, that's very valuable targeting information. Some use "like" or emoticon feedback for the same purpose, which is another category some bloggers love and others hate.

However, there are lots of disabled bloggers on DW, so you're probably not alone in your preference. You might have some luck getting people to cluster around that, which could be very useful. That has worked somewhat in other areas like whether or not people want constructive criticism or only positive feedback. If it's a topic you care a lot about, then discussing it may turn up further ideas for getting the kind of feedback you want and avoiding what you don't.

There are a handful of communities with a female focus including

shes_awesome and

where_no_woman. Depending on your topic, those might make good places to crosspost, since female fans often favor female characters.

Those are rapidly gaining popularity. I saw bundles of them in Cyber Monday sales. Also increasing is game design for versatility so the same basic game has a solo mode, a cooperative mode, a competitive mode, etc. Definitely check Kickstarter if you're shopping for more, they have a lot of that.

<3 bees! We just saw a local beekeeper at the holiday event we attended yesterday, in the pop-up community market. So I bought a jar of local honey. This summer we saw a honey club in a different nearby town, at two different events.

Me, I'd rather pay someone else to fiddle with hives and bottle the honey. My girls and I work on a barter system: I let them use my trees and flowers, and they pollinate said flowers so I don't have to run around poking flowers with a tiny paintbrush. I have honeybees, also bumblebees and lots of tiny native bees. My favorite is a miniscule bee that is solid metallic green. <3

A post a week, huh? I could manage that…surely…

It depends on what you want to post and why you blog in the first place. Mine is all open too, because it's really aimed at audience interaction for my writing, and the personal stuff is just an add-on to that. I don't post anything private.

Some other bloggers do like to post very private things, or they use their blog to network with a specific group of people, or as a diary, etc. DW is very versatile so people use it for many different things, and they don't all need the same tools. I don't bother with filters either, but that's another sorting tool. I mentioned it because some folks do put their fannish content on a filter for that.

If you plan to make an honest effort toward fannish posts, that counts. This community is meant for inspiration and encouragement, not pressure. Your stated topics certainly fit under the "fannish" umbrella. So if your favorite topics are fannish, you post at least weekly, and you remember to tag "Fannish 50" on them, then you've got a good chance at reaching 50.

It doesn't have to fit in one year. That's just a goal framework for people who want it.

My journal status: Public with some locked posts here and there, but they are not common.
Other details: Main fandoms are Tokusatsu, LoZ, and Old Anime (Especially Leiji Matsumoto's works), but I have an entire laundry list of things I love and post about. Anything that needs a CW is warned accordingly.
Anything else you want to share: My Journal is 18+ only, even for SFW posts. Anything that is NSFW is under a cut. I've done this challenge back in 2023 and the Fandom Fifty for this year, so I'm glad to see it making another return for the new year!

My journal status: mostly open with some friend-locked posts. but public for challenge posts and fic.
Other details: Science fiction, fantasy, horror are my bread and butter. Still have a soft spot for superheroes. I'm also an enjoyer of media with queer themes and stories focusing on WoC. Interview with the Vampire has been my latest obsession.
Anything else you want to share: Used to be something of a fic writer, less so in the past few years. But I'm excited for a goal that will keep me writing in 2025. And alltogether I'm here to find a few friends or maybe some feedback or at least journals with interesting people behind them. Just hope my contributions aren't too mainstreaming / boring.

Yeah, me too. I have Love Is For Children on the fanwork side and Polychrome Heroics on the original side. There are communities here for individual superhero teams or universes, but I haven't seen a general one for all superheroes.

Other details: I got to meet some lovely new people on DW last year so I'm hoping to continue the trend! I'm multi-fandom and taking a scroll through my journal/looking at my tags will give you a good idea. I also enjoy darker content and will make a note in the header or above the cut entry.
Anything else you want to share: My work/life balance means I am not always the most active but the slow paced nature of DW takes the stress off me, lol.

My theme: Not decided yet, but will probably be mixed; maybe I'll divide it like 10 favourite characters, 10 canons I loved as a teen, 10 rec lists... I'll have to mull this over.
My journal status: Personal entries flocked, purely fannish posts unlocked. I used to have a policy that everything would be unlocked, but over the years I've become more personal in my journaling.
Other details: My bigger fandoms include Twin Peaks, Bob Dylan, LotR and Witcher (books & Wild Hunt). I am very likely to post about The Shannara Chronicles and the Shannara books. Various canons have been dear to me over the years, some that I have never mentioned on DW, and I'll likely use this challenge to blather on about them and so share more about my sordid past. I am always up for making new DW friends.
Anything else you want to share: I have a terrible track record with making themed posts and keeping up the energy. I have signed up for challenges and started memes, but I think I've never finished any project. /o\ My goal now is to finish all 50 entries, but let myself chill on the content. Maybe I only have three sentences in me to write on a subject; maybe I'll just post a pic or rec a song that reminds me of a character. We'll see.

Other details: I'm multi-fannish across a range of mediums (anime/cartoon, books, movies, TV, video games) with a few comfort fandoms I return to often, like Harry Potter, Naruto, Star Trek: Discovery; and mostly a femslash fic writer. It's always fun to see people discover new fandoms.

Are you into manifesto writing at all? It used to be quite common for new fandoms to get canon guides, ship guides, lists of core fanworks, start here guides, etc. but they're nowhere near as frequent now. Those are all great resources for attracting and activating a community of fans around a fandom. We still see a few in

marchmetamatterschallenge and

shipmanifestos but more would be better.

My theme: mixed/none so I have a better shot at getting to 50. knowing myself, it'll be a mix of fanart (mostly doodles, maybe drawn icons), linkspams to other people's fanworks I enjoy, and rambling about [insert fandom here]. I'm kinda using this as extra motivation to get my thoughts in order and make posts I alread wanted to but keep putting off.
My journal status: I make some locked posts, but all my Fannish 50 posts will be public!
Other details: I'm into a lot of things, but the fandoms that wil most likely come up are animanga. right now I'm revisiting my old love for the Naruto universe, but I hope to post about more than that. I have an incomplete list of fandoms on my sticky post if you wanna check it out. that's also where you can find content warnings and a sorta friending policy. quick summary: I enjoy dark themes and smut, sometimes together. I have a small social battery, but I'm open to meeting new people, and no hard feelings if you ever decide to remove me from your circle/you want out of mine.

My theme: I'm leaning toward a series of metas about writing and what makes writing work for me as a reader

My journal status: Open for the most part

Other details: My fandoms are pretty much all books at this point. My biggest fandoms have been Harry Potter, Hunger Games, The Queen's Thief, and A Song of Ice and Fire. But my smaller (non-existent) fandoms really have my heart: The Rifter by Ginn Hale, Dragon's Winter by Elizabeth A. Lynn, The Half Bad Series by Sally Green, Halfway Human by Carolyn Ives Gilman, Doctrine of Labyrinths by Sarah Monette, Hurog by Patricia Briggs and Dark Rise by C.S. Pacat in particular. My only non-book fandoms are pretty much The Sims 4, especially Clare Siobhan on Youtube, and Life is Strange 2. Only 2 lol. And kind of Arcane, but I haven't watched season 2 yet.

Anything else you want to share: My tastes run a bit dark and require trigger warnings most of the time. I like sad books about characters who are deeply good people in very bad circumstances. Most of my meta will probably focus on whump/angst and what that means to me.

You might also check out

terror_sffa for dark stuff. It's kind of a catchall for horror, dark fantasy, dark sff, goth, etc.

I learned hurt/comfort from Master Tolkien. When you alternate the two aspects, you can crank the tension way higher without exhausting either your characters or your audience. I quite like digging into the infrastructure of how things work.

I actually started fannish/fandom 50 pretty late this year & still have 16 posts to fill for this year, but it's fun so we're signing up for more lmao.

Perhaps something linking my fannish interests and DnD. Other details: I will be mostly posting about Star Wars (the Clone Wars specifically) and gaming (many, many games). I'm a fan of angst and horror over romance and shipping. My theme: Mixed. I’ll be going down the list and trying to answer each one and then start from the top again, I think.
Edit: I saw the "50 Cryptids Ideal for Writing / Drawing" and I expect those to make a few appearances.
My journal status: Whatever I feel like, honestly. I occasionally hit my journal with „lock everything!“, but the posts for this event will be open. I also put my fics in their own dedicated communities, that are locked because of AI scraping paranoia. You can easily join if you’re interested.
Other details: My main fandoms currently are Hades, NU:Carnival and Godzilla. Content warnings are all over the place and tagged.
Anything else you want to share:
Covid fucked up my brain. (Struggling with CFS, sometimes more, sometimes less. But I’m lucky that I can still quite a few things…) Apart from that, adopting my dog despite Post Covid was a good decision, as he’s surely saved me from falling into deep dark holes.

Kink is pretty popular on DW. We've had some kinky communities and events all along, then a few months ago an influx of Cohost refugees brought more.

I am not a French speaker, but I am a hobby-linguist and language activist, so I heartily encourage people to use diverse languages. About the most I do with it myself is include fragments in my writing. The Rutledge thread of Polychrome Heroics is set in Vermont, which has a significant number of French speakers. "Watching The Water Department" is one example. Plus I have several other dialects scattered around including Quebec, Louisiana, think I may have done Missouri, etc.

Sadly there's not a lot of support for language diversity on DW. People use other languages here -- if you go to Latest Things, you'll see posts in Russian, Arabic, etc. -- but I haven't found an easy way to filter by languages or even a community for people who want to read diverse languages. I have seen people posting in French occasionally.

Quick and easy things you can do:

* Add "France," "French," "francophone," etc. to your Interests. This makes it easier for people to find you.

* Make tags identifying your content written in French and/or talking about France. This helps readers find those posts within your blog.

* Whenever you fill out an introduction questionnaire like this, continue to mention your French background and reach out to other speakers.

* You could also make posts (in either language) about French things such as books, movies, games, etc. and tag them accordingly.

More involved:

* Host an event for French speakers on DW where people would post in French and/or talk about French culture. Actually, you could piggyback this on Three Weeks for Dreamwidth! That's April 25-May 15. For that matter, Fannish 50 has no language requirements, so if you want to throw in French posts here too, that's fine.

* Launch a community for French speakers or for diverse languages in general.

These latter two would probably work better after you've built up some momentum and a group of French speakers that you know here, but are worth mentioning now.

I am always on the lookout for friends, if any of the above sounds interesting!
Anything else you want to share: I also read a lot and watch a lot of random movies, so am always open to babbling about those. My current watch thoughs are Star Trek: Voyager, Totally Spies and Red Dwarf. Though the only one of those I'm full on fannish about is Red Dwarf.
